UN Security Council Rejects Delay to Iran Snapback, Sanctions Set to Reactivate Sept. 27

The move follows a European snapback notification over JCPOA breaches that left no resolution to keep sanctions relief in place.

Overview

  • The Council voted down the RussiaChina draft to postpone reactivation by six months, with four in favor, nine against, and two abstentions.
  • UN measures, including financial and arms restrictions, are slated to resume at 8 p.m. ET on Sept. 27 (9 a.m. JST on Sept. 28).
  • The UK, France, and Germany initiated the snapback process in late August after alleging significant Iranian noncompliance with the 2015 deal.
  • Under JCPOA rules, sanctions automatically return if the Council fails within 30 days to adopt a resolution continuing sanctions relief.
  • Iran’s foreign minister thanked Russia and China and warned the U.S. and Europe would bear responsibility for consequences, with possible steps including reduced cooperation with the IAEA.
