UN Security Council Orders UNIFIL Shutdown in 2026 With Yearlong Withdrawal

The resolution directs a consultative drawdown designed to make Lebanon the sole guarantor of security in the south.

Overview

  • The Council unanimously adopted a French-drafted text after a compromise with the United States.
  • UNIFIL is directed to cease operations on 31 December 2026 and to withdraw personnel within the following year in consultation with the Lebanese government.
  • Israel welcomed the decision, with UN ambassador Danny Danon saying the mission failed to curb Hezbollah’s entrenchment.
  • The force comprises roughly 10,000 troops from about 50 countries and around 750 civilian staff, including more than 1,000 Italian personnel.
  • Recent security incidents included attacks on UNIFIL bases in autumn 2024 that caused minor injuries to four Italian soldiers.
