UN Security Council Extends AUSSOM Through 2026 With 11,826-Person Cap

The Council coupled the renewal with a push for predictable financing and forthcoming recommendations on UN support.

Overview

Adopting Resolution 2809 (2025) by unanimous vote, the Council authorized up to 11,826 uniformed personnel, including 680 police, for AUSSOM through 31 December 2026.
UNTMIS will cease operations on 31 October 2026 in line with the Secretary‑General’s transition road map endorsed by the Council.
The Council urged traditional and new donors to close chronic funding gaps for AUSSOM and flagged liquidity shortfalls at the UN Support Office in Somalia.
It requested the Secretary‑General to recommend adaptations to UNSOS support and to report on resource mobilization for AUSSOM’s 2025–2026 budgets, as well as relevant financial and operational developments.
The resolution condemned Al‑Shabaab attacks and pressed Somalia to ensure coordination between AUSSOM and international security partners to maximize effectiveness.
