UN Security Council Extends AUSSOM Through 2026 With 11,826-Person Cap

Overview
- Adopting Resolution 2809 (2025) by unanimous vote, the Council authorized up to 11,826 uniformed personnel, including 680 police, for AUSSOM through 31 December 2026.
- UNTMIS will cease operations on 31 October 2026 in line with the Secretary‑General’s transition road map endorsed by the Council.
- The Council urged traditional and new donors to close chronic funding gaps for AUSSOM and flagged liquidity shortfalls at the UN Support Office in Somalia.
- It requested the Secretary‑General to recommend adaptations to UNSOS support and to report on resource mobilization for AUSSOM’s 2025–2026 budgets, as well as relevant financial and operational developments.
- The resolution condemned Al‑Shabaab attacks and pressed Somalia to ensure coordination between AUSSOM and international security partners to maximize effectiveness.
