UN Security Council Convenes on Estonian Airspace Incident as NATO Plans Brussels Consultations

It marks Estonia’s first such request in 34 years, signaling elevated allied deterrence messaging.

Overview

  • Estonia reported that three Russian MiG-31s entered its airspace for about 12 minutes on Sept. 19, prompting an emergency Security Council session on Monday.
  • NATO said allied fighters, including Italian F-35s with Swedish and Finnish aircraft, were scrambled to intercept the Russian jets over the Baltic region.
  • Russia rejected the allegations as unfounded, saying the aircraft followed a planned route from Karelia to Kaliningrad without deviating into Estonian airspace.
  • U.S. ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz pledged to defend every centimetre of NATO territory and urged Moscow to halt what Washington called dangerous behavior.
  • NATO representatives from 32 countries are set to meet Tuesday in Brussels at Estonia’s request, as Poland warns it will shoot down objects that violate its airspace following earlier drone incursions into Poland and Romania.
