UN Rights Council Orders Independent Probe Into El Fasher Atrocities

Investigators will collect and preserve evidence for possible prosecutions following the RSF takeover of the city.

Overview

  • The council in Geneva adopted a resolution tasking an existing independent mission to urgently document violations in El Fasher and identify suspects when possible.
  • UN human rights officials reported evidence of large-scale abuses including mass killings, ethnically targeted executions, widespread sexual violence, abductions for ransom, arbitrary detentions and attacks on health facilities.
  • The World Health Organization says more than 450 people were killed in an attack on the Saudi Hospital after the RSF seized El Fasher on October 26.
  • UNHCR reports roughly 100,000 people fled the city in two weeks, with many heading toward Tawila, Malit and even Ad Dabbah, where arrivals face severe shortages of food, water and medicine.
  • The World Food Programme says it is scaling assistance for new arrivals, while the International Criminal Court is monitoring developments and the council’s mandate aims to preserve evidence for potential cases.
