UN Restores Iran Sanctions After Security Council Rejects Russia–China Delay Bid

European powers invoked the JCPOA snapback citing Iran’s accelerated uranium enrichment to about 60 percent.

Overview

  • The Russian–Chinese draft to extend the JCPOA framework by six months failed with 4 votes in favor, 9 against and 2 abstentions, clearing the way for snapback sanctions.
  • Reimposed UN measures take effect at 21:00 Brasília time on Saturday and follow the E3’s 30‑day process launched on 28 August.
  • The restored regime includes an arms embargo, curbs on enrichment and missile activities, global asset freezes and travel bans, and authorization to inspect specified Iranian cargo.
  • Tehran denounced the move, said it will respond and will not halt enrichment, and recalled its ambassadors from Germany, France and the United Kingdom for consultations.
  • Britain, France and Germany had offered up to a six‑month delay if Iran reinstated full IAEA access, addressed enriched‑uranium stock concerns and entered talks with the United States.
