U.N. Reports Over 10,000 Civilian Deaths in Ukraine Since Russian Invasion

Half of recent fatalities occurred far from front lines due to Russia's use of long-range missiles, while international aid continues to flow into Ukraine.

  • More than 10,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia's invasion in early 2022, according to the United Nations.
  • About half of the recent deaths have occurred far from the front lines, attributed to Russia's use of long-range missiles and the explosion of abandoned ordinances.
  • During the three-month period between August and October, 86% of verified civilian deaths occurred in territory controlled by Ukraine, mostly caused by explosives with wide area effect.
  • Germany has announced a new $1.4 billion aid package for Ukraine, which includes 155 mm ammunition, four IRIS-T missile systems, and anti-tank mines, but not the long-range Taurus missiles that Ukraine has requested.
  • U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reasserted American support for Ukraine during a visit to Kyiv, where he unveiled a new military aid package worth $100m, which includes anti-tank weapons, air-defence interceptors and an additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.
