UN Report Finds 50,000 Women and Girls Killed by Partners or Family in 2024

The UN urges laws to address offline violence as well as technology-enabled abuse.

Overview

  • Sixty percent of female homicide victims were killed by someone close, compared with 11 percent of male victims.
  • The home remained the most dangerous setting for women and girls in terms of homicide risk.
  • Africa recorded the largest absolute number at about 22,000 cases, with every region reporting femicides.
  • The slight dip from 2023 likely reflects uneven country reporting rather than real progress.
  • The findings, based on data from 117 countries, were released on Nov 24 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
