UN Reimposes Iran Nuclear Sanctions as JCPOA Snapback Takes Effect

European allies triggered the measure over unmet verification demands from inspectors.

Overview

  • Sanctions re-entered into force at 00:00 GMT Sunday, restoring the arms embargo, bans on nuclear- and ballistic-related trade, asset freezes, travel restrictions and tighter banking limits.
  • The E3 launched snapback on August 28 after talks failed, and the UN Security Council rejected a Russian-Chinese bid to delay the deadline.
  • The IAEA confirmed inspections resumed this week, though a special accounting of enriched stocks has not been delivered as Iran’s 60% uranium inventory stands around 440–450 kg.
  • Iran recalled its ambassadors to France, Germany and the UK, said it will remain in the NPT and denies weapons intent, and President Massoud Pezeshkian called a reported U.S. request to hand over all enriched uranium unacceptable.
  • Russia and China dispute the move’s legality and signal they may not apply it, and practical enforcement now hinges on national implementation as the EU and the U.S. urge renewed diplomacy.
