UN: Record 383 Aid Workers Killed in 2024 as 2025 Toll Mounts

Officials cite state forces as the most frequent perpetrators, with local staff bearing the brunt.

  • Nearly half of last year’s deaths occurred in Gaza with 181 fatalities, while Sudan recorded 60, representing a 31% increase over 2023.
  • The Aid Worker Security Database logged 599 major attacks in 2024, leaving 308 aid workers wounded, 125 kidnapped and 45 detained.
  • The highest concentrations of major attacks were recorded in the Palestinian territories (194), followed by Sudan (64), South Sudan (47), Nigeria (31) and Congo (27).
  • Provisional data show 265 aid workers killed so far in 2025 as of August 14, while WHO has verified more than 800 attacks on health care this year with over 1,110 health workers and patients killed.
  • UN reporting notes that government forces and affiliated groups were the most frequently identified attackers, and most victims were national staff assaulted at work or in their homes.
