UN Rapporteur Identifies Over 60 Firms Supporting Gaza’s ‘Genocidal Campaign’

Due for a UN Human Rights Council review Thursday, the report has drawn formal rebuke from Israel’s Geneva mission with Washington seeking the special rapporteur’s dismissal.

Overview

  • The June 30 report by UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese names over 60 multinational firms for supporting Israeli settlements and military actions she labels a genocidal campaign in Gaza.
  • Arms manufacturers such as Lockheed Martin and Leonardo, heavy machinery suppliers Caterpillar and HD Hyundai, and tech firms including Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM and Palantir are cited for facilitating operations and surveillance.
  • Albanese calls on the listed companies to cease dealings with Israel and urges legal accountability for executives under international humanitarian law.
  • Israel’s mission in Geneva dismissed the findings as “legally groundless, defamatory and a flagrant abuse of her office” and the US has urged the UN to remove Albanese from her post.
  • While the Human Rights Council lacks binding enforcement powers, the report could inform future arms embargoes, financial sanctions and prosecutions at the International Criminal Court.
