The non-binding vote follows a US Security Council veto of a similar measure last week.

Overview

  • The resolution passed 149-12 with 19 abstentions and demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
  • It calls for the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the return of Palestinian prisoners and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
  • Delegates strongly condemned the use of starvation as a method of warfare and cited an International Court of Justice order to open more border crossings for humanitarian aid.
  • The United States and Israel voted against the resolution and 19 countries abstained, including India, reflecting deep divisions among UN member states.
  • The Assembly reaffirmed commitment to a two-state solution and paved the way for next week’s UN conference on Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.
