Overview

  • United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the creation of a 39-member AI Advisory Body that aims to establish international regulatory measures for the risks and opportunities of AI development by the end of 2023. The body consists of academics and researchers, technology experts, politicians, and representatives from the private sector.
  • The areas of immediate focus for the advisory body include building a global scientific consensus on the risks and challenges associated with AI, harnessing AI for Sustainable Development Goals, and boosting international cooperation on AI governance. Their findings will help form the Global Digital Compact outlining shared principles for a digital future.
  • The Secretary-General acknowledges that while AI could provide significant benefits, including aiding developing nations and enhancing health and education services, it could also pose serious risks. Misuse of AI could undermine trust in institutions, weaken social cohesion, and even threaten democracy.
  • The advisory body's creation follows the announcement by four major technology firms - Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, and OpenAI - regarding the establishment of an AI Safety Fund, focusing on AI safety research. Major tech companies are represented on the UN AI Advisory Body, such as Google-Alphabet, Microsoft, and Sony.
  • The preliminary recommendations of the advisory body will be used for the preparation of the UN’s Summit for the Future in 2024. This feeds into global initiatives for ensuring responsible use of AI, including the upcoming AI Safety Summit in London and G7's AI code of conduct.
