U.N. Fact-Finding Mission Says RSF Used Starvation in Al-Fashir Siege

UN estimates put 270,000 people still trapped in the city under near-total blockade.

Overview

  • Presenting to the Human Rights Council, investigators concluded the RSF committed crimes against humanity and the war crime of using starvation as a method of warfare in Al-Fashir.
  • The mission said both RSF and SAF carried out atrocity crimes, citing torture, sexual violence and RSF detention sites described by survivors as “slaughterhouses,” with SAF airstrikes also killing civilians at markets.
  • Residents who recently escaped report constant shelling, robbery and beatings at checkpoints, with departures costing thousands of dollars and many people forced to survive on animal feed.
  • Reuters and local accounts say the RSF widened berms around the city, sharply raising food prices and restricting movement, as the U.N. says pre-positioned aid remains blocked from entering.
  • The army and allied Joint Forces say recent drone strikes pushed RSF units back in parts of the city, and a senior army source reported a new air-and-ground offensive in neighboring North Kordofan aimed at breaking the siege.
