UN Details Zamzam Massacre as New Evidence Shows RSF Cover-Up in El-Fasher

A new UN report on Zamzam documents over 1,000 killings with widespread sexual violence, increasing pressure for access and accountability.

Overview

  • UN human rights investigators report at least 1,013 civilians killed during the RSF’s April 11–13 assault on Zamzam camp, including about 319 summary executions and 66 documented incidents of conflict-related sexual violence.
  • The OHCHR says the RSF blocked food and essential supplies to Zamzam for months before the assault and describes patterns of killings in homes, markets, schools and health facilities that may constitute the war crime of murder.
  • Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab identifies roughly 150 clusters consistent with human remains in and around el-Fasher and documents a multi-week RSF effort to bury, burn and remove bodies, with many clusters later disappearing from satellite view.
  • Drone warfare has intensified across Kordofan, with at least 104 civilians killed, including 89 at a kindergarten and hospital in Kalogi, and additional casualties reported at Dilling Military Hospital as the SAF blames the RSF for the strikes.
  • Six Bangladeshi UN peacekeepers were killed by drones in Kadugli on December 13 and a drone strike on Thursday set ablaze the Atbara power plant, triggering blackouts in major cities as UN officials warn of possible war crimes and push for investigations and access.
