U.N. Details 60-Day Gaza Aid Surge as Ceasefire Nears Implementation

The U.N. says the surge depends on Israeli clearance, secure corridors, steady fuel, sufficient financing.

Overview

  • Under a reported deal expected to start 24 hours after an Israeli government meeting, aid convoys would expand, hostages would be released and some Israeli forces would pull back.
  • Humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said operations would ramp to hundreds of trucks daily to deliver food for 2.1 million people and targeted nutrition for 500,000, with the goal of reversing famine where it has taken hold.
  • The U.N. has pre-positioned 170,000 metric tons of supplies in Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Cyprus, which it says will not cover the full first 60 days.
  • The plan includes cash support for 200,000 families, restoration of health services, water and sanitation for about 1.4 million people, thousands of tents each week and temporary schools for 700,000 children.
  • Success requires at least 1.9 million liters of fuel weekly, multiple entry corridors, more scanning capacity and security guarantees, while only 28% of a $4 billion appeal is funded.
