UN Calls for Immediate Halt to Fighting in Eastern DRC

The appeal warns that armed drones and wide‑area explosives are killing civilians in towns and could force a new wave of cross‑border displacement.

FC/M23 soldiers in Goma in the eastern DRC. The UN called for an immediate end to fighting in the region

Overview

  • UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk on July 9–10 urged the DRC armed forces and the M23 to stop fighting and de‑escalate after intense clashes around Mulima village on July 4 and 5.
  • The UN said both sides have used armed drones, heavy artillery and other explosive weapons in populated areas, causing civilian deaths, injuries and destruction of homes and livestock.
  • The December US‑brokered ceasefire between Kinshasa and Kigali has proved fragile, with continued combat in South Kivu's Fizi and Mwenga territories and mutual accusations of violations.
  • Türk pressed Rwanda to end alleged support for M23 and withdraw its forces and urged Congolese authorities to speed up demobilisation and repatriation of FDLR fighters.
  • Humanitarian access is deteriorating as the UN fact‑finding mission probes grave abuses, displacement risk rises and an ongoing Ebola outbreak in South Kivu complicates safe delivery of aid.
