UN-Backed Report Lifts Gaza Famine Status, Flags Fragile Gains and Access Risks

Gains attributed to post-ceasefire aid flows remain contingent on unimpeded access.

Overview

  • The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification said no areas of Gaza are currently in famine, but it classified the entire territory at Emergency and warned famine could return under renewed hostilities or halted inflows.
  • The IPC estimated that more than 100,000 people are in catastrophic conditions and projected nearly 101,000 children aged 6–59 months will require treatment for acute malnutrition over the next year.
  • The United Nations and more than 200 aid organizations warned that Israeli impediments and a new NGO registration system could force de-registrations by December 31, risking a collapse of services including the closure of roughly one in three health facilities.
  • Israel’s COGAT and the Foreign Ministry rejected parts of the assessment and access critique, citing 600–800 aid trucks entering Gaza daily since the truce, most carrying food, figures disputed by Hamas and aid groups.
  • Severe winter storms damaged shelters and flooded camps, with UN officials reporting tens of thousands of children affected and Gaza’s Health Ministry reporting a newborn’s hypothermia death, underscoring urgent needs for shelter materials, fuel and relief supplies.
