Overview

  • The UN reported 383 aid workers killed in 2024, with 181 in Gaza and 60 in Sudan.
  • The Aid Worker Security Database logged 599 major attacks last year, leaving 308 wounded, 125 kidnapped and 45 detained.
  • Most of those killed were national staff targeted at work or in their homes, with government forces and affiliates the most frequent perpetrators.
  • Provisional 2025 data records 265 deaths as of Aug. 14 — including 173 in Gaza and 36 in Sudan — with no indication of a downturn.
  • Australia plans to launch a protection declaration at the UN in late September, as experts warn funding cuts are degrading aid worker security.
