UMass Lowell Lifts Lockdown After Report of Armed Person as Police Find No Shooter

A video shared on social media prompted a massive multi-agency search.

  • UMass Lowell issued a campus-wide shelter-in-place on South Campus and canceled classes and events during the response.
  • Emergency alerts described a roughly 5'5 Asian male in a gray or white sweatshirt and black shorts reportedly carrying a long weapon near Riverview Suites on Middlesex Street.
  • Massachusetts State Police, Lowell police, UMass Lowell police, FBI Boston, ATF, NEMLEC SWAT, K9 units and the State Police Air Wing conducted coordinated searches.
  • Lowell police later reported no evidence of shots fired and said it was not an active shooter incident, and normal campus operations resumed.
  • Authorities obtained the circulating video for review and asked the public to avoid the area during the search and to report tips to 911.
