UMass Lowell Lifts Lockdown After Report of Armed Man as Search Continues

Officials classify the case as a non–active-shooter incident with no gunfire reported.

Overview

  • The university issued a shelter-in-place on the first day of classes after a video appeared to show a person carrying a long gun near Riverview Suites on South Campus.
  • More than 100 officers from campus police, Lowell Police, Massachusetts State Police with Air Wing, K9 and NEMLEC SWAT units, the FBI, ATF and park rangers conducted a coordinated search using drones.
  • The lockdown was lifted around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, but the person seen in the video was not found, and police maintained an overnight presence at residence halls.
