UK's National Grid Terminates Contract with Chinese Supplier Over Cybersecurity Concerns
Following advice from the National Cyber Security Centre, components supplied by NR Electric are being removed from the UK's electricity transmission network.
- National Grid, the UK's electricity transmission system operator, has terminated a supply contract with NR Electric UK Ltd, a company owned by China's state electricity grid operator, due to cybersecurity concerns.
- The decision was made following advice from the National Cyber Security Centre, part of the UK's intelligence agency GCHQ.
- National Grid is now removing components supplied by NR Electric from the UK's electricity transmission network.
- NR Electric UK Ltd, incorporated in 2016, has been working with the National Grid since at least 2019.
- The components supplied by NR Electric are used to control and balance the grid and minimise the risk of blackouts.
