UK's Last Cinema Carriage Returns to the Screen for Railway 200 on 13–14 September

Volunteers restored the 1975 coach with bequest funding to honour former manager Alan Willmott.

Overview

  • The coach at Swindon & Cricklade Railway will host its first public screenings in 37 years.
  • It seats 25 and will be static for the event, showing British Transport Films on a rebuilt 1970s Bell & Howell projector.
  • Restoration since 2019 included repanelling, rewiring, repainting, a raked floor, a new speaker system, and vintage seats salvaged from a Deptford cinema.
  • Opened by Princess Margaret in 1975 as part of a travelling rail exhibition, the carriage later became a meeting room at a Bristol depot.
  • Admission to the screenings is free with railway entry, and organisers say showings on the move may be possible in future.
