Overview

  • Russia’s defense ministry confirmed Vice Admiral Mikhaïl Evgueniévitch Goudkov was killed when Ukrainian missiles struck his naval command post in the Kursk border region on July 2.
  • At least four missiles hit the headquarters, killing Goudkov and several senior officers in one of the highest-ranking Russian losses since the 2022 offensive.
  • Goudkov had been named deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Navy in March after leading the Pacific Fleet’s 155th brigade and earning the Hero of the Russian Federation medal.
  • The strike follows a wave of long-range Ukrainian operations inside Russia, including recent missile raids on Siberian airfields and drone attacks on defense factories more than 1,000 km from the front.
  • Fierce fighting around the Kursk frontier continues as both sides contest this strategic border zone.
