Ukrainian Journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna Posthumously Named IPI World Press Freedom Hero

The honor refocuses attention on forensic evidence of torture during opaque Russian detention.

Overview

  • The International Press Institute announced the award on Oct. 9–10, citing that her Sept. 19, 2024 death revealed the brutal treatment of Ukrainian journalists held by Russian authorities.
  • Roshchyna disappeared on Aug. 3, 2023 while reporting in Russian-occupied territory, with Russia confirming her detention only in May 2024 in a letter to her father.
  • Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General reported abrasions, bruises, a broken rib, and signs of electrocution on her body.
  • Russian authorities returned her body to Ukraine in February 2025 after months of delay, with the date of death reported as Sept. 19, 2024.
  • Her name was added Oct. 9 to the Bayeux memorial for journalists killed between June 2024 and June 2025, and the IPI will present the honors in Vienna on Oct. 24.
