Ukrainian Intelligence Service Admits to Assassination Attempt on Pro-Russian Businessman Oleg Tsaryov in Crimea

Ukrainian intelligence service SBU confirms "special operation" against Tsaryov, who once allegedly pegged by Kremlin to lead a puppet government in Kyiv; Tsaryov in critical condition.

  • Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service has confirmed that it was behind the assassination attempt on Oleg Tsaryov, a pro-Russian businessman and former lawmaker, who was thought to be chosen by the Kremlin to lead a puppet government in Ukraine post-invasion.
  • Tsaryov was shot twice on Friday at the Kirov Sanatorium in Crimea, and he is currently in a serious condition in intensive care.
  • The source from SBU described Tsaryov as a legitimate target because he had supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, encouraged Ukrainian towns to surrender, and had long been on the list of traitors who needed to answer for their crimes.
  • Oleg Tsaryov was a member of Ukraine’s parliament until he was expelled in 2014 for supporting Russia’s annexation of Crimea. He then became a senior pro-separatist official in Donetsk and later moved to Kremlin-controlled Crimea where he established a hotel business.
  • A source in the Ukrainian intelligence agency also confirmed that Tsaryov's shooting was planned and carried out by the SBU as part of their special operation.
  • The targeting of prominent Russian and pro-Russian figures has been an ongoing part of the broader Ukrainian war effort, reflecting a growing relationship with the CIA, which has provided extensive training and equipment to Ukrainian agents.
