Ukrainian Handball Federation Warns It Faces Collapse

The federation says five years of war and rising travel and border costs have left it asking the IHF and EHF for sustained structural aid to survive.

Overview

  • In mid-October 2026 the UHF publicly warned that five years of war have created a critical financial and logistical strain that threatens the federation's existence and formally asked IHF president Hassan Moustafa and the EHF for concrete, long-term support.
  • The UHF has deregistered most national teams but kept the women's side entered for the European Championship in Katowice in early December to preserve visibility and competition revenue.
  • The men's team is scheduled to travel to Iceland on 4 November for an EM qualifier, a trip the UHF says will cost more than €50,000 because players must assemble across several countries and transit through Slovakia before flying to Iceland.
  • The UHF has publicly condemned the IHF's decision to allow Russian and Belarusian team registrations, and the EHF has criticized the IHF process while reserving the right to decide actual participation and promising stepped-up cooperation with Ukraine.
  • The federation credits bilateral help from national bodies in Germany, France, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and the Baltic states with keeping programs afloat and says failure of international federations to provide structural aid could further harm players' careers, competition revenues and Ukraine's presence in European handball.
