Ukrainian Drone Strike Shuts Largest Unit at Russia’s Kirishi Refinery

The plant plans to run at roughly 70% capacity during a month-long repair, straining fuel output.

Overview

  • The CDU-6 crude distillation unit was halted after an Oct. 4 drone strike and fire at the Kirishi refinery, according to industry sources.
  • CDU-6 can process about 8 million tons per year, or roughly 160,000 barrels per day, accounting for around 40% of the site’s capacity.
  • Operations are set to continue near 70% by pushing other units above their nameplate limits while repairs are carried out for about a month.
  • Surgutneftegaz, which controls the refinery, is also restoring another primary unit damaged in a mid-September drone attack.
  • Kirishi processed 17.5 million tons of crude in 2024, and the downtime is expected to slightly reduce gasoline and diesel production during a domestic fuel shortage.
