Ukraine to Receive New Long-Range Precision Bomb from U.S.
The Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb, never before used in combat, is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine's strike capabilities against Russian forces.
- Ukraine is set to receive a new long-range precision bomb from the U.S., known as the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), which has a range of about 90 miles and can hit targets with a precision of one meter.
- The GLSDB, co-developed by Boeing and Saab, is made up of a precision-guided 250-pound bomb strapped to a rocket motor and can be fired from various ground launchers.
- The GLSDB is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine's strike capabilities, particularly as it can hit targets behind the front lines, potentially forcing Russia to move critical weapons, troops, and supplies further back.
- The new bomb is part of an already approved $2.2 billion aid package for Ukraine announced by the U.S. in February of last year.
- Ukraine will be the first country to use the GLSDB in combat, making it a critical test case for other countries that have been snapping up long-range munitions since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
