Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Depot and Voronezh After Russia Fires Hypersonic Missile

An emergency UN Security Council meeting is set for Jan. 12 in response to Russia's Oreshnik launch.

Overview

  • Kyiv officials reported at least four dead and about 25 injured after Russia’s Jan. 9–10 barrage, with damage to 20 residential buildings and the Qatari embassy and heating cut in nearly 6,000 apartment blocks.
  • Russia used its Oreshnik hypersonic missile against western Ukraine, an action Britain, France and Germany condemned as escalatory and unacceptable.
  • Ukraine said its drones ignited a fire at the Zhutovskaya oil depot in Russia’s Volgograd region; the governor reported no casualties and warned nearby residents may need to evacuate.
  • A Ukrainian drone attack on Russia’s Voronezh killed a woman and wounded three, damaging more than 10 apartment buildings and a school, according to regional authorities who said air defenses downed 17 drones.
  • Kyiv continues repairs to restore power, heat and water as regional strikes in Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk caused additional casualties, and the UN Security Council prepares to address the escalation on Jan. 12.
