Ukraine Starts Winter Mild and Dry as Forecasters See Warmer Season Ahead

A weak La Niña with a likely positive NAO favors warm Atlantic flow over Ukraine.

Overview

  • The Hydrometeorological Center expects the first week of the calendar winter to be mostly precipitation-free with cloudy, damp conditions and fog under high pressure.
  • Night temperatures are forecast at 0–5°C, with daytime highs of +3 to +8°C and +7 to +12°C in the south, while the Carpathians may see brief subzero nights.
  • Snow on St. Nicholas Day on 6 December is considered unlikely, with no significant changes in weather expected through the week.
  • The December–February average is projected at 1.5–2°C above the norm, though 3–7 day cold spells could drop minima to −5 to −18°C, colder at times in the north and the Carpathians.
  • Over the past three decades, Ukrainian winters have warmed by roughly 2.0–2.5°C with fewer subzero days and nearly halved negative temperature sums.
