Ukraine Says Russian Strike Cut Power at Chernobyl as Zaporizhzhia Remains on Diesel Backup

The loss of reliable offsite electricity has left critical safety systems dependent on diesel at Ukraine's nuclear sites.

Overview

  • Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported that shelling in the Kyiv region, including an attack near Slavutych, caused a blackout at the Chornobyl site and left the New Safe Confinement without power.
  • The IAEA said the outage affected the confinement over the damaged reactor and confirmed that two emergency diesel generators were supplying electricity to the structure.
  • External power to the Russian‑occupied Zaporizhzhia plant has been down for eight days, with generators running cooling systems and about 10 days of fuel available, a situation the IAEA called not sustainable.
  • Greenpeace and McKenzie Intelligence analysis of satellite imagery found no evidence of Ukrainian shelling at the damaged pylon and alleged deliberate Russian sabotage of the final external line, which Moscow denies.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that strikes on energy infrastructure pose a global threat, while a Russian-linked expert quoted by TASS dismissed disaster risk at Chornobyl and accused Kyiv of seeking to divert attention from Zaporizhzhia.
