Overview
- Ukraine’s Security Service (SSU) published footage describing how an Il-38N Sea Dragon was struck ahead of a December 15 underwater-drone attack in Novorossiysk.
- SSU officials said a drone carrying an airburst warhead with roughly 2,000 downward-directed fragments detonated over the Il-38N’s equipment bay and damaged its engine.
- The agency said the aircraft had been actively countering its sea drones and was the only Black Sea asset of its class able to detect the Sub Sea Baby underwater system.
- SSU claims Sub Sea Baby drones then detonated against a Project 636.3 Varshavyanka (Kilo-class) submarine in port, rendering the diesel-electric, Kalibr-capable boat inoperable.
- Russia has disputed reports of significant damage to the submarine, and Business Insider noted it could not independently verify the SSU’s video timing or location.
