ZAPORIZHZHIA, UKRAINE - 2024/07/29: A drone operator of the 15th Brigade (Kara-Dag) of the National Guard of Ukraine seen with a FPV (first-person view) kamikaze drone on a wheat field after a military training exercise. The mass use of FPV (first-person view) drones in hostilities between Ukrainian and Russian forces has radically changed the pattern of modern war. Successful use of one or more cheap drones makes it possible to destroy equipment worth millions of dollars. The military uses FPV drones as kamikaze drones and installs various warheads on them. On the other hand, FPV kamikaze drones are precision weapons that are capable of striking various armoured vehicles and destroying enemy manpower. Overview

  • On August 1–2, Ukraine’s SBU and Unmanned Systems Forces struck the Ryazan and Novokuibyshevsk refineries, the Anna Nefteprodukt depot in Voronezh, the Elektropribor plant in Penza and the Primorsko-Akhtarsk drone airfield in Krasnodar Krai.
  • The attacks ignited fires at multiple oil and defense-industrial sites and caused at least three civilian deaths and two injuries across western Russia.
  • Russia’s Defence Ministry reported downing 338 Ukrainian drones overnight, highlighting the escalating air-defense contest.
  • Damage to the Elektropribor electronics plant threatens Russia’s military-industrial supply chain, while the airfield strike disrupts Shahed drone launch operations.
  • The deep-strike operation reflects Ukraine’s strategic shift toward offensive drone warfare aimed at degrading Russia’s fuel reserves and defense production capacity.
