Ukraine Downs 140 of 176 Russian Drones in Overnight Attack

Ukraine’s high intercept rate shows layered air defenses are holding despite ongoing local damage and persistent pressure on air-defense resources.

Overview

  • A large drone wave that began Thursday evening and ran into the night of Oct. 22–23 saw Ukrainian forces neutralize 140 of 176 attacking UAVs, according to the Air Force.
  • The assault included 92 jet-powered Shahed-type strike drones plus slower Gerbera and Parodiya decoys launched from multiple Russian regions and occupied sites.
  • Ukraine used a layered mix of responses—fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missile units, electronic warfare, unmanned-system teams and mobile fire teams—to shoot down or jam the targets.
  • Hits and falling debris were recorded at 19 and 13 locations respectively, one DTEK thermal power plant halted generation, and ten strike drones were still airborne when reports were filed.
  • The strike follows months of intense drone attrition—Operation Task Force South reported destroying 6,457 enemy drones in September—and underscores Russian shifts to faster jet drones and Ukraine’s need for additional interceptors this autumn.
