Ukraine Destroys Over 40 Russian Bombers in Deep-Strike Drone Raid

Kyiv demonstrated its advancing drone reach to strike deep into Russian airfields on the eve of peace negotiations in Istanbul.

Overview

  • The operation, codenamed “Web” by Ukraine’s Security Service, involved smuggling FPV drones into Russia hidden under wooden shed roofs mounted on trucks.
  • Drones struck airfields across five regions, including Belaya in Irkutsk and sites in Murmansk, Amur, Ivanovo and Ryazan, damaging A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22M aircraft.
  • Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the attacks caused fires and multimillion-dollar losses, while repelling drone launches in the Far East and western regions.
  • In retaliation, Russia launched its largest drone and missile barrage since February 2022, deploying 472 drones and seven missiles against Ukrainian positions.
  • Russia seized Oleksiivka in Ukraine’s Sumy region and a Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian training unit killed 12 soldiers, prompting Commander Mykhailo Drapatyi to resign.
