Ukraine Confirms Assassination of Defected Lawmaker Illia Kyva in Russia
Kyva, Convicted of Treason in Absentia, Found Shot Dead Near Moscow; Ukraine's Military Intelligence Claims Responsibility
- Former Ukrainian lawmaker Illia Kyva, who had defected to Russia, was found shot dead near Moscow. Ukrainian military intelligence confirmed they were responsible for the assassination.
- Kyva had been a regular participant in Russian state-run media, frequently criticizing the Ukrainian government. He had been sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court to 14 years in prison for charges including treason and incitement to violence.
- In a separate incident, a Russian-backed politician in occupied Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region, Oleg Popov, was killed in a car bombing. Ukraine has not commented on this attack.
