Ukraine Braces for Weekend Deep Freeze With Lows to −25°C

Official forecasts flag mixed precipitation, widespread road ice, plus gusty northerly winds.

Overview

  • The Hydrometeorological Center projects the sharpest drop on Sunday night, with much of the country near −20 to −25°C and daytime readings staying well below freezing.
  • Friday brings cloud cover with snow or rain by region, early road icing in many areas, and temperatures diverging from about −7 to −12°C in the north to +1 to +8°C in the south and southeast.
  • On Saturday, western and northern regions as well as Vinnytsia and Cherkasy are forecast at about −12 to −17°C at night and −9 to −14°C by day, with −5 to −10°C expected elsewhere.
  • Mixed precipitation persists, including wet snow and freezing rain with icing on roads, plus local fog in parts of the south and central regions and wet-snow adhesion in central and Kharkiv areas.
  • Forecasters expect northeast to north winds at 5–12 m/s with gusts up to 15–20 m/s in the northeast, and they warn Monday could turn even colder with −20 to −25°C and pockets near −30°C in some northern, Poltava and Kharkiv areas.
