Overview

  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed five cases of serogroup W meningococcal disease in UK returnees and their close contacts between February and March 2025.
  • Pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah must receive the MenACWY vaccine at least 10 days before departure and carry a valid vaccination certificate.
  • Health authorities stress the importance of monitoring for meningitis symptoms such as fever, severe headache, stiff neck, or rash during travel and for two weeks after returning home.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) and NaTHNaC advise all travelers to Saudi Arabia to consider MenACWY vaccination due to the heightened risk in crowded pilgrimage settings.
  • UKHSA also reminds travelers to take precautions against MERS-CoV, including avoiding raw animal products, contact with camels, and practicing good hygiene.
