Overview

  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed five invasive meningococcal group W (MenW) cases in England and Wales among individuals recently returned from Saudi Arabia or their close contacts.
  • All Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, as well as seasonal workers, must present a valid MenACWY vaccination certificate issued between 10 days and three to five years before arrival in Saudi Arabia.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported 11 MenW cases in Saudi Arabia between January and March 2025, all involving pilgrims.
  • Meningococcal disease can lead to severe complications, including meningitis and septicaemia, with high fatality rates and potential lifelong disabilities such as hearing loss and brain damage.
  • UKHSA also advises travellers to follow MERS-CoV precautions, including avoiding contact with camels, undercooked animal products, and maintaining strict hygiene practices.
