Overview

  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed five cases of invasive meningococcal group W (MenW) in individuals returning from Saudi Arabia or in their close contacts.
  • Travellers to Saudi Arabia, especially Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, must receive the MenACWY vaccine at least 10 days before travel, as per UK and Saudi entry requirements.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) reported 11 MenW cases among Umrah pilgrims in Saudi Arabia earlier this year, highlighting the heightened risk at mass gatherings.
  • Meningococcal disease can progress rapidly, with a fatality rate of 8–15%, and survivors may face severe complications such as brain damage, hearing loss, or limb amputations.
  • UKHSA advises vigilance for meningitis symptoms, including fever, severe headache, or rash, within two weeks of returning from Saudi Arabia, urging immediate medical care if symptoms arise.
