UK Warned of Unpredictable Iran Threat by Intelligence Watchdog

The report calls for outlawing the IRGC to enable a sustained national security strategy.

Overview

  • The ISC identified at least 15 Iran-backed assassination or kidnapping plots against UK-based individuals since early 2022, targeting dissidents and Jewish or Israeli figures.
  • It warns that Iran’s reliance on proxy networks makes its physical threat unpredictable and comparable to that posed by Russia.
  • The committee found the UK to be a top espionage target for Iranian cyber operations, ranking just below the United States and Saudi Arabia.
  • Since the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, Tehran has advanced its programme to the point where it could rapidly assemble a weapon.
  • In response to the report, the government placed Iran on an enhanced foreign influence tier, imposed fresh sanctions and is assessing the legal and practical steps to proscribe the IRGC.
