Overview
- Create “hedgehog highways” by cutting small gaps in garden fences to let them roam for food and shelter.
- Put out fresh water and plain, high-quality meat-based cat food, wet or dry, to help maintain fat reserves as they rouse to forage.
- Avoid bread, milk and mealworms because these can make hedgehogs ill.
- Suspend use of garden chemicals when hedgehogs are around since these products can harm them.
- If one is out in daylight, weak, flea-infested or under about 450g in winter, keep it warm in a ventilated box with a wrapped hot water bottle and contact a wildlife rescue centre.
