Overview

  • The National Security Strategy of June 24 calls on the UK to "actively prepare" for the first potential wartime threat on its own soil in years.
  • Households are being directed to assemble first aid kits with items such as waterproof plasters, bandages, antiseptic, sterile dressings, gloves, a thermometer, eyewash solution, medical tape and tweezers.
  • Guidance also advises stocking bottled water, tinned food, batteries, power banks, a radio, hand sanitiser and baby supplies in an easily accessible location or a ‘grab bag’.
  • Launched in May 2024, the UK Prepare website provides advice on emergencies ranging from power cuts and infrastructure failures to climate threats and cyber attacks.
  • Officials plan a cross-government exercise later this year to test national crisis coordination and emergency response plans.
