UK Unveils Plans for 80th Anniversary Commemorations of VE Day
Four days of events in May will honor the end of World War II in Europe, with a focus on remembrance and community celebration.
- The commemorations will begin on May 5, with the Cenotaph in London draped in Union flags and a military procession to Buckingham Palace, followed by a flypast featuring historic and modern aircraft including the Red Arrows.
- Street parties, including one aboard the historic HMS Belfast, will be held nationwide, supported by community initiatives encouraging public participation.
- A new installation of 30,000 ceramic poppies will be displayed at the Tower of London, symbolizing a 'wound' to reflect the sacrifices made during the war.
- On May 8, the anniversary of VE Day, a service at Westminster Abbey and a concert at Horse Guards Parade will conclude the four-day commemorations, with over 10,000 attendees expected.
- The 80th anniversary of VJ Day on August 15 will also be marked with a service at the National Memorial Arboretum, honoring those who served in the Pacific theatre.
