Overview

  • Ministers will raise defence spending from 2.3% to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 and aim for 3% in the next parliament.
  • A £1.5 billion package will fund at least six new munitions factories to create an “always-on” supply of shells, explosives and weapons.
  • The government plans to procure up to 7,000 UK-built long-range weapons to rebuild stockpiles depleted by aid to Ukraine.
  • The Strategic Defence Review commits £1 billion to a Digital Targeting Web and creates a Cyber and Electromagnetic Command to counter more than 90,000 state-linked cyberattacks.
  • An additional £1.5 billion will upgrade poor military housing even as army ranks remain at their smallest since the Napoleonic era with growth deferred until after this parliament.
