UK Unveils £9 Billion, 10-Year Overhaul of Armed Forces Housing

The pledge responds to reviews that found large parts of military accommodation unfit.

Overview

  • Almost all of the 47,700 service family accommodation homes will be refurbished over the next decade, with about 14,000 to be substantially refurbished or replaced.
  • More than 40,000 family homes are set for upgrades such as new kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems under the Defence Housing Strategy.
  • The plan proposes building over 100,000 homes on surplus MoD land with priority access for service families and veterans under a 'forces first' approach.
  • The government cites the Annington Homes deal, which returned 36,000 properties to public ownership, as enabling savings to reinvest in forces housing.
  • A Commons committee previously found two-thirds of SFA and around a third of single living spaces not fit for purpose, with detailed delivery timelines to be set out as the strategy is published on Monday.
