UK to Expand Police Powers to Curb Repeat Protests After 492 London Arrests

Four remain in custody over the Yom Kippur Manchester attack, with the watchdog scrutinizing officers’ use of lethal force.

Overview

  • The Home Office will amend Sections 12 and 14 of the Public Order Act to let police factor in the cumulative impact of repeated demonstrations when imposing conditions on marches and assemblies.
  • Ministers will also review whether existing powers are sufficient and consistently applied, including the option to ban protests outright in certain circumstances.
  • The Metropolitan Police said 492 people were arrested in central London, including 488 on suspicion of supporting the proscribed group Palestine Action, after a sit‑in went ahead despite calls to cancel.
  • Counter-terror detectives were granted five more days to question two men, aged 30 and 32, and two women, 46 and 61, while an 18‑year‑old woman and a 43‑year‑old man were released without charge.
  • Police identified the attacker as Jihad Al‑Shamie, 35, who was shot dead outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation; two worshippers, Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were killed, and the IOPC is examining whether police gunfire may have contributed to Daulby’s death.
