UK to Allow Sale of Pint-Sized Wine Bottles in Post-Brexit Move

Despite the reintroduction of imperial measurements for wine, a government consultation reveals overwhelming support for retaining the metric system.

  • Starting in 2024, the UK will allow the sale of wine in pint-sized bottles, a move made possible by Brexit. This will be the first time in 50 years that Britons can buy 'pints' of wine.
  • The new 568ml bottle will be available along with other post-Brexit 'freedoms,' according to the British government. Pre-packed still and sparkling wine in cans and bottles will be sold in 200ml and 500ml quantities.
  • Before the UK's exit from the European Union, such decisions were taken in Brussels, meaning that EU members had to collectively agree to new rules in this area.
  • The change has been long planned by previous Tory ministers, and long talked up as a Brexit boost by Eurosceptics who championed leaving the EU.
  • Despite the change, a government consultation revealed 98.7 percent of people were in favor of keeping metric units when buying or selling products, leading to the decision to retain the metric system.
