UK Survey Finds Widespread Workplace Harassment as WalkSafe Launches Anonymous Reporting Tool

UK employers now face new legal duties to prevent harassment under the Workers’ Protection Act.

Overview

  • In a 2,000-person WalkSafe/Opinium poll, 27% of women and 16% of men reported workplace harassment in the past five years.
  • One in seven women reported unwanted sexual behaviour, and 16% of workers have considered leaving their jobs due to such experiences.
  • Many incidents go unreported, with over one in ten wanting to tell a manager but not doing so and 9% not reporting sexual harassment for fear they wouldn’t be believed.
  • Support for safer channels is strong, with 51% wanting anonymous reporting at work, 54% saying they would be more likely to report if anonymous, and 84% welcoming a safety app.
  • WalkSafe introduced Pro Prevent, an in-app anonymous check-in for employees that flags issues early for HR, alongside tribunal powers to increase compensation by up to 25% when employers breach their preventive duty.
